Fibroid
Leiomyoma
Myoma
Uterine fibroids are growths / tumors that develop within or from the wall of the uterus / womb.
Fibroids are very common in women. They can be very small, microscopic in size; but in some women can grow to a very large tumor. Although it is possible for just one fibroid to develop, usually there is more than one. And sometimes, they can be very many fibroids of varying sizes in one uterus.
Symptoms of fibroids include:
Sensation of fullness or pressure in lower abdomen
Menstrual pains
Abdominal fullness / distension
Urinary problems
Abnormal menstruation – including heavy periods (sometimes with clots) or irregular periods.
Abdominal pain
There can be other symptoms that are not mentioned above.
PLEASE NOTE: THERE ARE OFTEN NO SYMPTOMS.
There are women who do not know that they have fibroids until they have a gynecological examination.
Complications of fibroids include:
Infertility
Pregnancy problems
Cancerous changes may occur. A definite diagnosis is usually not made until the time of surgery.
Treatment
There are different types of treatment available. Make an appointment to speak to the gynaecologist about the treatment options and to discuss which treatment is best for you.
A myomectomy is a surgical procedure to remove just the fibroids. The uterus is preserved and hence fertility is also preserved.
NEW!! NEW TREATMENT!!
Robot Assisted Key hole (Laparoscopic) surgery for fibroids
A new minimally invasive surgical procedure. A less invasive surgical procedure that uses state – of – the – art surgical system powered by robotic technology.
The surgery is performed by the Gyne (surgeon). The Gyne (surgeon) controls the robotic arms which perform precise movements of the fine micro-instruments. As the instruments used are very fine and flexible, complex surgeries can be performed through tiny surgical openings. Hence, the patient’s surgical wounds are very small.
There are numerous possible benefits with robot assisted keyhole surgery. These include:
Shorter hospital stay
Less Pain
Less risk of wound infection
Less blood loss and therefore less need for blood transfusion
Smaller surgical wounds with less scarring of wounds.
Faster recovery & quicker return to normal activities
Uterine preservation
Robot Assisted Key hole MYOMECTOMY surgery for fibroids – remove just the fibroids using robot assisted technology. The surgery will remove only the fibroids. The uterus and fertility is preserved.
Please consult the specialist gynaecologist Dr Oei Pau Ling to discuss this new surgical technique.
